This week, I am dedicating my blog to an amazing Mom I am blessed to know throughmy homeschool group. I have been wanting to introduce her for a while…..and have not had the right opportunity. So, this week, she will ‘own my blog’ for four full days! I know you will be blessed by her sweet whispers and words!
Do Dreams Come True?
By Anita Mellott
“Write to encourage others.” The faint whisper sounded in my heart. I ignored it. But it persisted, growing louder with each passing month.
“What encouragement do I have to offer others?” I wondered. “Besides, after editing other writers’ words all day, I’m too exhausted to write my own.” I countered.
The whisper continued through the angst and uncertainty of a high-risk pregnancy. When, against all medical odds, God blessed us with a baby, the whisper had wrapped itself around my heart and was there to stay. By the time my thirteen years of writing and editing with a non-profit came to an abrupt end in the economic down-turn, I couldn’t escape the whisper.
I took tentative steps toward writing again: an article here, a devotional there. As ideas took shape, a book of devotionals for homeschooling parents, born out of the joys and challenges of my journey, flowed from my pen.
That faint whisper sounded in my heart four years ago. Since November 2009, my thirty queries for the homeschool devotional received twenty-seven rejections, and three acceptances. In April 2010, I signed a contract with Judson Press, medium-sized, traditional publisher.
Tears trickled down my cheeks in September 2010 as I typed the 180th devotional. A few days later, I sank to my knees and I lifted the 200-page manuscript heavenward in thanksgiving and dedication.
Now, more than a year after I signed a book contract, I’m humbled and excited that the whisper that sounded four years ago, and developed into a dream–a dream to encourage homeschooling parents, to provide practical, biblical inspiration for each homeschool day–will soon be a reality. School Is Where the Home Is: 180 Devotions for Parents is now available for pre-order at all major book retailers and will release on June 15, 2011.
