It was a hot day, yet she was so cool, so loving as she sat down.
The little girls wanting to learn to weave with their fingers.
The love of the son was in her voice…”Do you want to learn? Oh, sit down…and I’ll show you.”
Her sweet voice, her gentle way, she drew them in.
My sprout…teaching me…
I saw him…he wanted to know how to win a prize.
“Do you know the verse, John 3:16?”, she asked him.
“Here, here it is in the Bible…take it and come back when you know it.”
He sat there…two feet from me, I’ve seen that look before. The look that says….hmmm…words on paper…no sir, I don’t like them. Why? I had seen them in her eyes…my sprout.
I moved closer and asked him if I could help….because learning something new…well, you need a partner for that…and he smiled and moved closer.
I read the verse…I didn’t need to read it…I know it. It’s the most beautiful verse to me. It says it all…it wraps the entire package in a beautiful bow….and so, I helped him unwrap it.
“For God so loved the World”….I looked in his eyes. “That does not mean just me….that includes the ‘world’…even YOU (he looked at me…not convinced. I showed him the words…and read them again…He smiled.
“That he gave his one and only son.” Oh…he looked at me. “Does that mean he let his son die for me and the world?”
“What do people give you,” I asked. “Like gifts?” he asked.
“OH…like a bike or something”
“Have you ever turned down a gift?” I asked….especially one that was completely free
OK….so, consider this gift, the gift of his son…
“That whoever believe in him shall not perish”
He looked at me again….So…if I don’t believe in him, I die, but I’m going to die anyway…does that mean I go…to …you know?
Hmmm….well, let’s not worry with that…let’s keep going to the last part.
“but have eternal life.”
“He looks at me…that means…if I believe in him….I get to live in Heaven with him?”
Yes, that is the beginning of your relationship with HIM….
He sat there…ready to learn that verse…to bury the beauty of it in his heart
We left that day…that hot afternoon…the children, fed probably the only meal they would have. My little ones..tired and truly impacted by the love that surrounded them. The children who had less, yet the love and peace was so amazing it overwhelmed them. They had served, yet as they served, they received so much more than they imagined.
The boy….so touched my heart..reminded me of this verse, the one with the spark…that is the one that began to unwrap the gift…so many years ago…in a little church, without my family…visiting with a friend, who took me to hear the truth and I walked forward and accepted that gift.
and I said these words
“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16
Every week, I enjoy spending time with Jennifer Janes…planting seeds. She is such an inspiration and truly has hidden his word in her heart. We are able to speak on the phones at times…and I can honestly say, I am a better person…each time I hang up the phone, because she speaks his words, hides them in her heart and is able to share them with true love and conviction. She understands 1 Peter 3:15 and, as she lives it out, she teaches me….maybe one day, this sprout will grow, too.
So,now it’s your turn. Share your verse, what you’re learning…we’d love to hear from you…and share it with others! And…if you’re looking for more encouragement: check out Seeds of Faith and A Holy Experience!
