Our little girl is growing up quickly….and I’m trying to ‘work ahead’ to be prepared for those tender teenage years.
Last week, I shared our current reading of Beautiful Girlhood and the Companion Guide to Beautiful Girlhood. Today, I want to share another wonderful book with you: Beyond Beautiful Girlhood plus Companion Guide.
Shelley Noonan has created a beautiful book that allows you to sit and spend time truly mentoring your teen daughter’s heart. These sensitive years can be full of angst, pressure and can hinder a Mother-Daughter relationship if not handled well…..by you, Mom.
I remember my teen years. I know my Mother did the best she could….trying to survive and not having the right tools to handle those years….they were more difficult (on both of us) than they needed to be. So, I am determined to begin now….with spending time with Shelley during B’Twixt and B’Tween. Reading through Beautiful Girhood an d using her Companion guide…but, what about after that?
After that….is Beyond Beautiful Girlhood. It is a beautiful sweet book written to allow a Mother-daughter flexibility in sitting and working through embracing and growing their relationship from 7-21 weeks. Yes…that is amazing flexibility, isn’t it? You can work through it in 7 weeks (one chapter per week for 7 weeks) or you can take three weeks per chapter! There is a wonderful guidance at the beginning of the book that explains how you can use the book to get the most of out of it for you and your daughter.
The text is revised from the original 1900 edition of Winsome Womanhood and contains 7 chapters.
- The Girl of Thirteen
- A Daughter at Home
- The Girl and Her Friends
- Her Innocent Pleasures
- Her Books
- Higher Education
- Her Occupation
Each chapter begins with a beautiful section to read with your daughter. My eyes truly teared with the first chapter. I so remembered my early teens…and had I had a book to read with my Mother like this…I know my heart would be much softer today. After you read the topical section, the chapter is broken down even more:
Mother to Mother. In these sections, you will find Shelley’s own memories, her wishes of what she would have done and did do
Mother’s Journal and Bible Study: Shelley gives you ample, well thought sweet questions to help you drive down to your own heart and helping your daughter’s heart!
Daughter’s Journal and Bible Study: Shelley has captured the essence of a young teen. Her words are beautiful and will help draw your daughter into a time of sweet purity, as she begins to answer the question and seek the heart of Christ to become her own!
For Mothers AND Daughters
Projects….Yes, it’s time to roll your sleeves up and work on some projects with your daughter. As I have read through the book….I definitely see an opportunity to utilize the 3 week time frame. The projects look fun and inviting. They take time, but I already see…that the time I spend working on special projects around our home, truly draw me and my daughter closer together
Resources: Shelley, thought of everything you would need. She has provided you with a list of resources to help make each chapter a success….additional books to read, workbooks, etc….It’s all there! It will take some planning and forethought on your part…but, it can be done!
I have to admit…the teen years scare me….I want to build what I can now in our relationship to help bridge the gap that is to come during those years. With Shelley’s books in my hands…that fear is dissipating. I am cherishing the moments now, knowing it will be as beautiful as I make it. Now that I have the tools and the knowledge of what lies ahead….I know I can do this.
Shelley has been a tremendous source of support and encouragement from me…. From a few short moments at a GHEA conference to some conversations we have recently had (thanks to technology)….I pray that one day, I can sit and enjoy a cup of tea with her…embrace her and thank her for helping me to allow wounds to be healed and create a Beautiful Girlhood with my daughter now…and then…..Beyond Beautiful Girlhood in the future!
Blessings! I am sharing this at the Hip Homeschool Hop.…for all the Mama’s approaching this special time with their girls!
