I sat and held my little guy for two days…as he suffered from a stomach virus. The first of his life…and this book, carried me through it….and made me thankful for my little guy..and even for this little sickness he had.
So many…so many around us, Moms, Dads, siblings, children, friends…diagnosed with illnesses, yet there are some problems we face that many doctors overlook, but there is one, who does not overlook any of them..and He knows them all.
Carey Jane Clark has written a book..that will probably be one of my most favorite books of all time. I sat…for two days, and a total of ten hours, turning the pages of this book…
Two friends, two Moms; friends since childhood. They begin the story: Celia and Sarah…with tension, you know, the typical tension of friendship…two women so much alike, yet so entirely different, with a history than transcends most friendships.
Celia and Sarah’s sons, both, best of friends….and it’s a big day for them on the soccer fields…the Moms…spend the morning, one waiting for the other…one not sharing a hurt from home…and they stand on the field and watch as Justin (Sarah’s son) begins the big shoot out….and now, it’s Caleb’s turn. Caleb…recently having had a headache…and some shortness of breath begins to run for the ball…and falls over.
He’s not breathing…and is quickly taken to the hospital. Dr’s are afraid they can not fully diagnose his illness…it’s not as ‘simple’ as asthma (if asthma could be simple…), it’s deeper…a tumor resting on the lower part of the brain…the part that controls…well, everything.
In the midst of Caleb being diagnosed with this tumor…which only has one prognosis…Celia’s mom reunites and remarries (unknown to Celia) to her Father, who walked out when she was just a small girl.
Celia faces walking through the horrible diagnosis, the nights of holding her son as he succombs to the side effects of treatment, the introduction of her Father back into her a life…and a friend…who has always been there, now….at a distance.
Caleb….the son…the boy of 9, so much like my own, my oldest…full of energy, desiring to see the best in all, he pulls his Mother and Father (through the guidance of his Grandparents)…towards God. The disbelief in his parents..is unmistakable. Their fear to turn over their hearts to the Father…understandable, their doubt, their concerns…all rushing to one pivotal point in the book…a moment in the hospital…a moment that could only have the impact that it has…if all of the other relationships and turns in the book…were not understood by the reader.
Carey Jane…has written a book…that gets to the heart, it is beautiful, it is heart wrenching…and as I sat, and held my little one, I was thankful….the sleep deprivation, the inability to eat/sleep….would leave him soon. For so many, it will not…it is a daily reality.
