Last week, we thought about Mary….have you ever considered Joseph?
Four books discuss his life: Matthew, Mark, Luke and John focus on the life of Christ. He is all through the Bible, from Genesis through Revelation. He is the Wordbut, what of his Earthly Father. The man who adopted him before birth so that all could be adopted through Jesus’ life, death and His true Father – God-and fulfill the prophecy that the lineage of Abraham-David would forever have that place of Kingship over all?
Mary; she heard the news and she ran to Elizabeth’s arms. That’s what Luke says.
Matthew, the displaced tax collector tells us the genealogy. He shows how the seeds were planted, grew and Christ was conceived by His mother…and how the not-physical Father-Joseph questioned what to do, but then was visited by the Angel.
Luke-the Dr he gives us a little more detail the timing of all events could run simultaneously, but we get a better glimpse. Mary was visited by the Angel, then, the Holy Spirit came upon her and she left for three months to spend time with Elizabeth.
At some point Joseph learned the news. His young bride-to-be his betrothed was with child. Did he learn this before Mary left and ‘ponder’ it while she was gone and the Angel then visit while Mary was with Elizabeth? Did that occur after Mary returned by now, her belly a little swollen with the child?
The timing, not fully evident.
The heart of Joseph is.
“Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a public example, was minded to put her away privily.” (Matthew 1:13)
Do you see that verse? It is full of so many lessons. Because he was just – this word – the greek word: dikaios meaning equitable (in character or act); by implication, innocent, holy (absolutely or relatively):–just, meet right(-eous)…according to Strong’s Concordance He was just. He lived his life for God. He wanted to follow the law, his wife, with child – not his…he had to follow the law, but he did not want to hurt her.
Wow, can you imagine how that must have felt to him? The gut punch but, still he was a KNIGHT he was chivalrous then, the Angel appeared and his life was forever turned upside down or was it already upside down to be Just in a world filled with the unjust. To receive a hit to the stomach and still love out loud more than hurt out loud.
The Angel appeared and then, the road changed, the decree that send them traveling to Bethlehem, the babe, born in a manger. Another.prophecy.fulfilled. More Angels, kings and shepherds come to worship this babe, this King. They flee to Egypt REALLY? The place that had held their ancestors in bondage after they had saved them from famine now, the babe born to save them all would be sent there again, to be kept safe to save the world. But, we aren’t there, yet. I’m jumping ahead. But, how can we not, as we consider Joseph.
The man born…to raise up the Messiah. To be spoken of so little, but he had an amazing role to play. He stepped forward….and out of the light, was husband to Mary and adopted Dad to the Savior…in a genealogy of broken people…the tax collector pointed them out…and Luke…the Dr….he gave us the details…
What do you think about this man, Joseph. What if he were alive today? Can you imagine the stories he would tell. I don’t think he would ever tell one that would leave anyone feeling anything less…than the love of God!
