10 Steps In the Morning


“Sun’s up, Mommy!  Time to get up!” – the words of my (then 3-year-old) son still echo in my memory.  It was a sunny morning, the second summer in our home – and honestly, I wanted nothing more than to sleep until the noon day sun reached the peak of the summer sky.

The winter had been long – the man’s eyes still shadowed my dreams.  The memory of performing cpr on this man, this father of children and young wife – watching his eyes drift into the Father’s hands.  His body was in so much pain.  The memory of that day and those moments never seemed far from my thoughts.  To add to that my Mother’s death came just two weeks after his.  These events on top of everyday life left my heart and mind seeking a way to find a new normal.

Sleep: it seemed to be the remedy.  But the remedy was confused by restless dreams and nightmares that never seemed to end.  What I did not realize, through all of the restless nights was that peace was merely a step away.

That morning; the words my sweet little spoke and the joy in his voice –  combined with the beauty of the sun seeping through the cracks in my curtains began the awakening of my soul again.

The words of a child reminded me of the lives I had an opportunity to enjoy this life with.

In my heart, I heard my Father’s words – speaking to me.  They were reminding me that these children: these beautiful hearts, created in his image – are blessings.  Blessings I had been missing as I mourned death, rather than finding joy in the sweet moments that pass too quickly.

It was then that I made a decision to change our mornings.  I no longer wanted to be the Mom lounging in the bed, with my children desiring to have a Mom awake in the morning.  I wanted to be a Mom who was up and prepared for my children.  That’s when a change began in our home.

I began seeking Joy and Peace in the morning.

You can, too.  You can wake each morning and spend time with the one who loves you.  You can prepare your heart and mind for those sweet littles who love nothing more than the hugs, kisses and sweet words of their Mommy – that’s you!!!

Here are some very easy ways to prepare for joy and peace in the morning with your family.

  • Create a Quiet Space and Prepare it at night
    • Bible
    • Pen/pencil/paper
    • Lamp/Candle
    • worship music
  • Prepare your favorite drink – coffee or tea – ready to stew or steep
  • Go to bed at a decent time
  • Allow yourself one time to hit that snooze button
  • Get up when your alarm goes off (or after that first push of the snooze button)
  • Spend time praying, reading and meditating on God’s word
  • Enjoy that first cup of coffee/tea – and consider the fact that your Father is sitting there enjoying it with you
  • Listen to your worship music
  • Go for a walk
  • Now, go wake those littles with kisses and giggles

  1. Oh, I love this :) It was only 2 short years ago that I hated to get up. I dragged myself out of bed, was cranky and it was not how I wanted to start my days. Thanks to hellomornings I’m up and reading His word before I start my day. It’s amazing how grounding myself in Him makes all the difference!

  2. I have to agree that THIS one thing is a game changer. No matter what the day brings, no matter what the heartache is…I can be a better me if I am up before my children and ready for the day. In the past two years, I have seen the time gradually increase from the meager 15 minutes that I started with to a now over 2 hours. I NEED this time to spend with my Lord, as He is the only one who can fill me for whatever lies ahead in my day!

    • Thank you Savannah – I want to encourage others to truly grow their families for God. In order to do that, we have to be prepared as Moms – often giving up sleep…..Thank you for dropping by.

  4. That spoke to me today. I lost my Dad this year in January and it seems I just grieve and grieve at times. I want nothing more than to sleep, then I feel so guilty because I am not up ahead of my kids, ready for the day…..what you said in the post about looking at death and not looking the lives He has given us to enjoy this journey with….that really hit home. Thanks!

  5. Thank you for this! My mother passed on 17 years ago (yikes!) but this season is always hard. From October thru January. October marks her birth, followed by the holiday season that always seems emptier without her and January marks my birth and her death. I’ve been wanting to get up earlier, to spend that time with the Father, but I just can’t seem to get it down. I will def be incorporating the tips here to get up and rolling. :)

    • Nicole, I am so sorry you are still struggling. Though, I can understand it. I remember the minute my Mom passed away…I’m trying to celebrate it now. Really trying to find joy in that.
