Must Have Christmas Books

This is one of my favorite times of the year. The weather cools off, the hot chocolate is always close at hand and we love spending our nights reading about the Birth of our Savior next to our Christmas Tree.

Tonight, I pulled out our books and listened as the children begged me to read each one. Oh, it’s not possible to sit and read each and every one of these books every night. There are only so many hours in a day. So, I do my best to read at least one before the weary bones of this Mama begs for sleep to overwhelm the little souls who seem to have more energy than a freight train running through the country-side.

This year, I want you to find real Joy in Christmas. So, I’m sharing some of our favorite books that point to the truth about the Joy we all seek.

-Santa, Are You for Real?SANTA, ARE YOU FOR REAL?  - This was the first book we purchased when trying to decide how we wanted to celebrate Christmas.  It is good for any home desiring to keep Santa in the background.  We enjoy reading this every year….but Santa is not really part of our home, just the story of Saint Nicholas.

-Saint Nicholas: The Real Story of the Christmas Legend - This is the book we read to our children when we discussed the truth about Santa – Saint Nicholas.  It was a night we will never forget.  Our younger children were ok with it.  Our oldest was upset when he realized the meaning of the word “Legend”.  He was upset with us for having lied and I think a little upset that he finally understood the truth…about Santa.  Overall, this is one of our very favorite books!

-What Star Is This? - Sweet, easy to read book about the beautiful star that filled the sky the night of our Savior’s birth.

-The Littlest Angel - This book makes me cry.  A sweet little 4 year old boy dies.  He is the little angel in Heaven.  His robe is never right, his halo falls off…and he decides to give a gift to the Christ child that seems a little out of place.  But, that gift is treasured by God and becomes part of our Christmas story.  Oh, another favorite – we always look forward to reading.

-Santa’s Favorite Story: Santa Tells the Story of the First Christmas- Whether you believe in Santa or not, this one takes you to the heart of Christmas.  My children love reading it.

-The King’s Christmas List - Oh, my heart loves this book!  A sweet little girl is taking a gift to the King.  Along the way, she gives it all away to strangers and arrives without a gift.  She learns that the gifts she gave to strangers….were actually gifts to the King.  This book helps your children begin to understand the beauty of giving to those in need – it is priceless!

-Away in a Manger - Thomas Kinkade’s beautiful portraits combined with the beautiful words to Away In a Manger will make this a special book your entire family will look forward to!

-Mortimer’s Christmas Manger- My little guy always pulls this one out first.  A sweet mouse sets up home in a manger, until he learns the story – the truth about Christmas.  It is a sweet book filled with cute pictures that will draw your children in year after year.

-When Jesus Was born from the Hooked on Bible Stories New Testament Essential - This is a book I received in a Hooked On Phonics Kit. It is a great book to add to your list for an early reader.

Favorite Advent Books – - These are our favorite books to read for the Advent.  We have read all three and will re-read the first one this year.  They add something special, as we travel through the season, learning more about God’s glory and traveling back in time- walking the steps these young people may have actually walked just before the Christ child was born

What are your favorite books for Christmas?
