Nothing warms my heart more than hearing God in the every day. So often, I get caught up in the big things and the little things that I forget that he is there. I often fail to realize that he is in the small details – including details of a shoe box.
For the past few years, we have been giving Christmas away. Our children do receive three gifts but the budget for those gifts is small. We decided ( a few years ago) to give more than we purchase for our own. The change at first was difficult. The comparison game of who got what up the street, down the block is one that can hinder a young heart from the beauty of the season.
I often consider not sharing what we do. You know, don’t let the left hand know what hte right hand is doing. Honestly, we don’t want accolades. But, we do want to share. We want to share so that everyone can grow and learn more about the beauty of giving…
It can be given, even in a box.
Truly, he cares about the box. He knows where ech will go.
About a week ago, a friend who works for Samaritan Purse, shared her Summer excursion with me. She is blessed to help bring people together to pack and ship the boxes…and then, she is honored to help deliver them.

She shared stories of children not knowing about a toy, how to use them…or even what a brush is (in the areas where heads are shaven due to lice).
We don’t see it in America: we have more than we need.
One Box Can Change a Life
Yet, what about a box with size 9 shoes. Would you send those? Would you enter a shoe store, purchase a pair of size 9 shoes and know that God will get that box to the very child who needs that exact shoe?
He will. He has. She witnessed it.
This past weekend, we took our children and gave them a basket the size of a shoe box. We sat and prayed. We explained how little these blessings across the world have.
Our blessings have witnessed true need to some extent as we have reached out in our own community to serve those with less.
This, this was different though. This was a store filled with things they ‘want.’ Would they give up the want for those who need?
One Box Can Change a Heart
Each one took a basket…filled them and came home. They looked at the boxes and one by one the reality of what they were doing became evident. Their hearts began to break and tears began to roll.
“Mama, is this really all they will get…maybe forever, here?” one asked.
Awe, my heart began to break and smile. The gift of the Father…the spirit working to transform these takers into givers….
They’re getting it. They’re teaching me.
Help With Hurricane Sandy
Samaritan’s Purse is now requesting help not only through boxes but through volunteers who can help respond to Hurricane Sandy. Please, read here for details.
Will you join us?
