My husband and I have prayed that our children would grow up having and knowing godly virtues. We were excited to receive a packet of We Choose Virtues Flash Cards from We Choose Virtues to use in our home. We received the smaller cards two years ago – but they did not have scripture on them. While we have used them, I have added scripture on my own. The new cards, the Flash cards, I LOVE
The packet of flash cards – contains 13 very colorful cards. Each one has a cute picture with a Virtue (and a name for character that begins with the same name as the virtue) on one side. On the flip side, there is a cute rhyme followed by a sentence that the child can memorize. Following those two sentences, is a Bible verse that applies directly to the virtue. (We placed them on our dirty french doors that open from our kitchen into our ‘library’…. no, I didn’t clean them or photoshop the picture – you’re getting the real deal!)
I love this. Why? Because, all too often we parents think we are the key to our children’s learning, knowledge and obedience to God. That just isn’t true. God’s word and the Holy Spirit are the key to our children’s heart. By teaching them scripture-linked virtues they learn wisdom directly from God. That is what they need!
Why? Because we are human and sinful. We don’t want to tell them to ‘follow our rules and grow up this way’ because they will see us sin on a daily basis. They need to learn directly from the only one who is perfect. Through this, their hearts can and will be transformed in God’s time.
The packet does contain games and it states that it was created for children 3rd-5th grade. Honestly, I didn’t even take that into consideration. Why? Read below…
Virtues – something that seems to be lacking in the world today. True godly virtues/morals, based on God’s word and not the ever-changing morals of man.
Because I think any child can learn any verse as soon as they are old enough to speak. If they can’t read well or at all, it’s a great opportunity for them to sit, read and learn with an older sibling.
I have enjoyed getting to know more about We Choose Virtues over the last few weeks. It’s been fun reminding my children about a virtue we are working on, hearing them quote scripture and the fun rhyme. It’s been beautiful watching God’s Word begin to transform hearts – even my own. Yes, even me. You see, when I consider these virtues, as we read them, play games (suggested in the packet) I’m not just teaching my children. I’m teaching me, too. I grew up with some bad habits and this Mama’s heart is transforming with them.
Grows All Hearts
I’m remembering I need to obey God, be kind, helpful…and the other virtues that are covered in the packet. Yes, this is a multi-generational tool that will help transform your family. But it takes time, it takes diligence (there’s another virtue) and it comes with no promises – other than those you read in the Bible.
God can not heal your home and your hearts until you bury HIS word in the hearts in your home. Will you give him a chance?
