We are told in Joshua 1:8
“Do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.”
If you really read that and understand it…it is a HUGE undertaking. I grew up in a home that believed in Jesus…but we never really read the Bible together or talked about it a whole lot. I generally, went to church alone….
So, this time of learning…is for me and my children.
As you know, I recently read through the Bible in 90 Days. That was an amazing experience and I recommend it to everyone…A new session is starting soon, so please consider it. It is difficult, but powerful.
I mention that because it brought to light the true beauty of the Old Testament. Since then, my husband and I have been speaking with several people at Answers In Genesis, reading some of their books, watching DVDs, spending time at the museum….and one thing has really struck us. Before we go any farther with our children’s Biblical study in the New Testament, we want them to truly see the beauty of the old, beginning with the first Book of the Bible: Genesis….the foundation for the Beautiful testimony God provided us with.
In the first sentence of the Bible, you and I are given such amazing worth, yet is it missed? Is it not thought of as being important?
In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. Genesis 1:1-2
If you take those verses and apply them to your daily life….think about the things you might do differently. If you truly believe God created ALL things…would we walk by that homeless person with a bottle in their hand….or would we stop, look into the eyes of an eternal soul and perhaps pray or find someone to help. Would we gaze at that person who hurt us…hold on to that grudge and smirk/gossip…or would we stop and pray that God would heap so many blessings upon that person that their heart and our heart would change and our relationship could be restored. Would we pass by that teen….covered in tattoos/piercings…and perhaps speaking words our ears hurt when hearing….and instead of staring/glaring…would we walk up and dare to HUG them and tell them..what they’re searching for…God, already knows and loves them…and pray for them? (sidebar, my husband and I have tattoos, had piercings and he was homeless for poor choices. I will share that story later….but, I wanted you to know, I post this with no judgement…we’ve seen both sides)
I want my children to see the beauty and the blessings.
They can, when they truly know who created all things!
So, this year, we continue to use our Scripture Memory System from Simply Charlotte Mason. We select our scriptures from various places including: Seeds Family Worship. They provide free Memory Cards and a Verse Memorization Check list. No, we are not perfect. It does not happen at every meal (that is the goal!)….but, for the most part, we are making progress and my children are learning verses I still can’t wrap my mind around.
Last year, we studied Who Is God…and I love that book. It is on our shelf. We will reference it throughout the year.
Our main Bible study will come from Answers For Kids. I am excited about this fun Bible Curriculum…the songs and the extras that come along with it. I hope to have the story of creation painted and plastered across our home by the end of the year…..and the words of our Maker….spoken into the hearts of my children…so that as they grow, they will know, they are loved…for the Heavenly Father created them…and HE LOVES THEM…and He loves YOU …and He loves me!
What seeds are you planting this week? I hope you’ll join me and Jennifer Janes. We have both faced some difficulties lately, as we know you have. So, as we pray over each person who reads this page, reads any of the links..those who do link up or even leave comments….please pray for us. I am linking this post to Women Living Well and A Holy Experience. Other beautiful landing spots to read God’s word and find encouragement!
