Their books provide your family with good, character-building stories with a Biblical Framework. I fell in love with this company and their books when I heard Mark Hamby speak at the GHEA conference in 2010.
Today, I want to share with you reviews about two of their Audio Books and provide two people with the opportunity to win one of the books below.
Each audio begins in a tavern: Mr. Finnian’s Tavern, which is alive with many people… All, average, like us..and experiencing trials we all experience in this world…
The Hedge of Thorns (book by John Hatchard in 1819) begins with a man who has lost his job….and is afraid of what will happen if he can not provide for his family. Mr. Finnian pulls him into this beautiful story of a family who has very little….yet blessed with a loving Father, Mother…brother and sister.
The Father gives his son sound advice to stay on the path of life….and that includes not straying from the path when walking to/from their home. You see, along that path is a Hedge of Thorns…which…proves to be too tempting for the young man. He, at a young age and full of adventure talks his sister into allowing him into raising her into the hedge…and as he does…she is dreadfully hurt. Her face/eyes scarred….to be a reminder for the remainder of their lives…of his sinful actions of disobedience.
His Father takes his son to the scene, after a period of time, in which the boy thinks his father will next speak to him. And, he shows his son that while the Hedge of Thorns may have hurt his little sister, it saved her from the Chasm on the other side. That Chasm had taken the lives of other children…their father (yet to be identified) put the hedge in to save others…and here, you see, the love of a Father, mourning his daughter….saves other children.
As the story progresses, his parents pass away and….once again strays from the path of obedience and commits a sin that he has to live with personally for the remainder of his life….and the story about the children who lost their lives, are entwined in his…beautiful…showing God’s sovereignty…and his plan…..but, I can not tell you more..
The Basket of Flowers (book by: Christoph Von Schmid in 1878) begins with a sweet young girl named Jessica in a glum due to problems with her “BFFL”. Quickly, Mr. Finnian is talking with her and helping her get over her woes by focusing on helping others. He takes her to his Exploratium (which is full of books) and takes her on a journey for buried treasure…..that can only be found in The Basket of Flowers!
This sweet story begins with a young girl thrown in a dungeon and she is quickly asking God why this is happening…and the man she is imprisoned with tells her how blessed she is because her day began with flowers. She thinks back to the morning…when her father gave her the flowers, the lilies, which her father explains that they lily is a sign of purity. His words of loving, yet true. Mary spends the day creating a beautiful basket of flowers for her friend….and heads out to give it to her friend. Her sweet friend, who lives in the castle loves it! Sweet Amelia (her friend) decides to bless her friend, she in turn gives her a beautiful dress…to replace the worn out tattered dress sweet Mary is wearing.
Soon, her friend, Amelia, rushes to Mary and states that her mother’s diamond ring is missing. Both, Amelia and Mary’s Father begin to question her statements of innocence…… Her Father…states he does believe her innocence and tells her to take comfort and know that if she is to be persecuted, God will give her comfort.
“It is far better to die for the truth than life for the truth”…..words that her father uses just before his sweet daughter is arrested….
Her jail mate….does not believe in God and mocks him by questioning why her god would let her go through that if he were real…
As she goes to trial, her Father tries to console her by explaining that she has become a selfless woman that her Mother would be proud of….the trial is held as the gallows are built…..Julliet grieves for her friend and begs her mother (the Countess) to help…the judge enters…and…
I’m not going to tell you more about this story, either!
But, I will tell you this….God’s love and his Character shine throughout each story and they end in a way that leaves you and your children in such a sweet state….they are just beautiful!
What becomes of the characters in our stories? What character traits do the stories unveil to help you and your children grow closer to Christ?
