It’s easy to get caught up in making sure boxes are checked, times tables memorized, a child understands the difference between a noun and a verb…and perhaps you even dive into the objective and nominative cases within grammar.
But, when you finally put pen and paper down…sit, relax and do what comes naturally, the boxes no longer hold center stage.
More becomes less and the growth of the heart of the child and their knowledge begin to explode right in front of you.
As a home grows from boxes and check marks, to one of books, nature, and relationships……and you dare to throw in poetry….the memories can begin pouring through your hearts like a river cascading over a waterfall….. the words drive pure joy and love into the heart of both the one reading…and the one listening.
This Mom is taking off the yoke of a box and check marks more and more each day….no longer allowing the curriculum to rule our home; but the natural love of learning and curiosity my children have….is beginning to take us on our daily adventures of learning and growing together.
Do you remember my melt down with spelling this week? I can’t wait to tell you….what a blessing that ended up being for our home...but, that’s another story….However, it lead us to nature this week. We sat in the sun, relishing the beauty of budding trees, listening to the birds singing, as we began our spring nature journal…..and a new adventure……..
As the children finished drawing in their nature journals, they ran to the swing set to play, laugh and enjoy one another. Me, I flipped through Natural Science Through The Seasons (Parsons) to find…what I knew would be hidden in it’s pages…beautiful poetry for my sweet ones to read….
One at a time, I had them come over and listen I read a poem to them….allowing them to hear the song it would sing to their heart…. and then, they read it back to me. Each, with their own achievement in reading could have read it without me reading it first. Yet, by hearing me read it, I spoke words of love into their hearts and removed their fear of not knowing what to do….I lead by example…not teaching, not preaching…just reading……
The day was so beautiful. Each breath they took and each word they read spoke love deep into this Momma’s heart. This Momma who is growing with them, soaking in their love and pushing away the boxes, seeking to praise the one who placed these children into my care, seeking his path for their lives….and desperately praying to provide them with a loving and peaceful childhood….by adding nature and poetry to the mix and throwing the boxes and check marks away!
What are your Moments to Remember this week? Join Jolanthe…and while you’re at it, join in Wrapping it Up and The Homeschool Mother’s Journal. To me, it’s not about filling up a page of what you did, but how you spent perhaps one moment in time, filling your children’s hearts with the Love of the Father.
